A Gentleman’s Quiet Day

Form: Villanelle

The empty rooms will stay
Silent now the kids have grown
Gentleman alone today
Through the window sun’s ray
Warms his chair from dawn
The empty rooms will stay
Until dusk comes to play
He sleeps there on his own
Gentleman alone today
For she has her working day
Before walking through town
The empty rooms will stay
And as the skies turn grey
She buys fish like she’s known
Gentleman alone today
And on her lap he’ll lay
Night falls they aren’t alone
The empty rooms will stay
Gentleman alone today
