Summer Heat

Form: Ballade

I am no fan of summer heat
As the sun burns down on my skin
I prefer snow beneath my feet
An icy wind and frost therein
While kicking through the leaves of sin
I feel my spirit is dancing free
The joys of winter my chagrin
Until the summer you loved me

Then warmer days, winter complete
I saw you smile and felt a grin
Surely this is my own conceit
To think your love is mine to win
And through the spring in flirty spin
In my dreams it is you I see
On misty nights and lost within
Until the summer you loved me

The summer came with no retreat
It’s not the sun burning my skin
But desire setting a new beat
No turning back, love must begin
Like sunshine mixed with sloe gin
Can you so love a devil’s grin
The season of sun, you and me
With open eyes to all therein
Now is the summer you loved me

I know your love is mine to win
And all we are is meant to be
My heart was lost in my own sin
Until the summer you loved me
