The Bug Catcher

Form: Ballad Stanzas

He came with nets and old glass jars
And sharp scalpel blades
The insects flew from near to far
As through the grass he wades

A caterpillar moved to slow
And in the jar, it went
A beetle with no place to go
Into jars with no vent

And slugs and snails twisted in slime
A spider and a frog
My eyes grew wider all the time
From staring all agog

I cried but he just wouldn’t stop
My heart was torn apart
It’s science he said in a strop
Shut up and do your art

So while he was rushing through grass
The old jar lids moved round
I smirked as the bugs fled the glass
Dropping lids to the ground
